Depression Q & A

What is depression?

Depression is more than simply feeling sad. It’s a serious mental health condition that affects the way you think, feel, and behave. When you have depression, normal daily activities like working, eating, and sleeping may be difficult. In severe cases, you may even feel like life isn’t worth living.

If you can relate to these symptoms, know that there is help. The compassionate, supportive, and professional team at Connect Wellness is committed to helping you achieve freedom from the confines of depression.

How do I know if I have depression?

The best way to find out if you have depression is to get a professional diagnosis from one of the providers at Connect Wellness. You may have depression if you experience at least some of the following symptoms on most days for at least two weeks.

Not everyone experiences all symptoms of depression. Common depression symptoms include:

  • Persistent sadness or low mood
  • Feelings of pessimism or hopelessness
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Anxiety and irritability
  • Decreased energy
  • Moving and speaking more slowly
  • Appetite and weight changes
  • Insomnia or oversleeping
  • Body aches, headaches, and other physical symptoms with no clear cause
  • Thoughts of death or suicide
  • Suicide attempts

Periods of depression are called depressive episodes. Some people only have one depressive episode in their lifetime, while most experience several. Symptoms of depression can change in type and severity over the course of your life.

How is depression treated?

First, Dr. Amiri or another provider performs a thorough assessment to understand the unique biological, psychological, and social factors that affect your state of mental health. Then they develop an individualized treatment plan based on this information.

The core of the treatment program at Connect Wellness is their intensive outpatient curriculum led by Dr. Amiri. He and his team use evidence-based therapies to treat depression, including:

  • Mindfulness-based therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)

As you advance through the 36-session program over the course of 90 days, the team at Connect Wellness reviews and revises your individualized treatment plan. They work with you to establish new objectives so that you can move forward and heal.
