Mental Health Diagnoses

Symptoms of mental illness are broad and vary in frequency and severity. Mental health disorders can typically impact an individual's mood, thought process, and behavior.

Below are common mental health disorders that Connect Wellness specializes in treating.

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Anxiety symptoms are experienced as ¨real¨ by the individual and serve as a signal to the mind and body that something unexpected and uncertain either will happen or is happening.

This anxiety spectrum disorder is characterized by the experience of excessive and uncontrollable worry and can include physical and cognitive symptoms. The individual can experience fatigue, irritability, sleep disturbances, poor concentration, muscle tension, and fidgetiness. These symptoms can impact one's ability to fully function or fulfill personal duties and responsibilities.

In our approach to the treatment of this disorder, errors in thinking are pointed out and individuals are taught to become mindful of situations that ¨trigger¨ anxiety symptoms. Moreover, the individual learns to relax the mind and body through focusing on real-time experiences.

Major Depressive Disorder

Depression affects the whole person as far as how one feels, thinks, and behaves. It impacts the ability to sustain motivation for and be interested in activities that were once satisfying.

Symptoms are often characterized by feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, not being able to get out bed, sleeping too much, malaise, lacking confidence, loss of appetite, or weight gain. Some individuals describe the body and mind as feeling ¨pain¨ when experiencing depression symptoms.

Our approach helps patients identify and deconstruct unconscious and negative thinking patterns, and replace them with life affirming behaviors, thoughts, and activities as a long-term solution for managing depression.

Bipolar Disorder

Also referred to as manic-depressive disorder, the individual with a bipolar disorder experiences mood swings. The mood episodes can be experienced in two distinct ways: mania and major depression. During a manic episode, the individual´s mood can become markedly elevated, irritable, or expansive. Everything in one´s world can seem amplified. Thoughts seem louder and faster, conversations seem more excitable, creativity can be limitless, and the individual can engage in impulsive and instantly gratifying behaviors.

Depression in bipolar disorder can be quite debilitating and is commonly characterized by depressed mood, loss of interest in activities, as well as increase in sleep and appetite.  Symptoms can last for days, weeks, or months at a time.

The individual with bipolar disorder might experience irritability, impulsivity, crying, or even self-harm thoughts. Cognitively, some people might have delusions, and even difficulty with concentration.

Our goal is to form a solid ¨join¨ with our patients, and help identify, treat, and manage symptoms.

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD)

This particular neurodevelopmental disorder usually manifests in childhood and adolescence( before age 12). For some individuals however the symptoms are not identified until much later in life. Symptoms include hyperactivity/impulsivity and/or limited ability to sustain attention.

Our goal is to help the individual with symptom recognition and management through the use of evidenced based therapies.
